3/8/2023 - Wyman’s partners with Down east Sunrise Trail Relay for 2023 Event

The Down East Sunrise Trail Relay (DEST Relay), Maine’s first and only 24-hour team relay, is pleased to announce an exciting new partnership with Wyman’s.

“This relationship is truly a natural fit, as much of the terrain that our runners cover in this event goes through traditional wild blueberry lands during the active harvest season,” says race director Gary Allen. “This amazing partnership will help us grow and further give back to the communities where we run.”

First held in 2014, the Down East Sunrise Trail Relay racecourse follows a 102.7-mile route starting at Washington Junction near Ellsworth, and makes its way downeast along the picturesque Sunrise Trail before finishing on the waterfront in historic Eastport, the eastern-most city in the continental U.S. The scenic route delivers breathtaking views of coastal mountains, forests, open wetlands, and barrens of wild blueberries, Maine’s first fruit. This unique event, which typically draws about 500 runners, is like none other held in Maine and boasts an enthusiastic and loyal following by both participants and community groups along the trail.

“We’re so proud to support this unique and iconic event and Crow Athletics,” says Colleen Craig, Senior Communications Manager at Wyman’s “This unique event showcases Maine’s spectacular landscape, including the wild blueberry barrens in Maine which is the only place in the nation where wild blueberries are commercially grown. We’re so excited to share the land we love and the community we care about with the athletes, support crews, and organizers of the Down East Sunrise Trail Relay. Crow Athletics’ work to encourage and support healthy lifestyles is right in line with Wyman’s mission to help the world eat more fruit, and share this uniquely-nutritious berry we steward with the world.”

ABOUT WYMAN’S
Based in the Washington County town of Milbridge, Maine, Wyman’s was founded in 1874 by Jasper Wyman and is in 5th generation of Wyman family-ownership. Wyman’s has grown into one of the world’s leading growers, processors and marketers of wild blueberries, and the country’s No. 1 brand of frozen fruit in retail. The company owns 55,000 acres of land throughout Maine and the Canadian Maritimes and works with partner farmers around the world to source their full portfolio of delicious fruit. The company provides more than 200 year-round jobs in addition to hundreds of seasonal jobs during the harvest season.

ABOUT WILD BLUEBERRIES
Wild blueberries, vaccinuim angustifolium, are Maine’s most iconic crop. The low-bush berries took root in Maine 10,000 years ago, after the glaciers receded, and Maine is the only state in the U.S. where wild blueberries are commercially grown. These berries are “wild” because they grow in their natural ecosystem — there‘s no artificial breeding or genetic modification, and the soil is never tilled.

Decades of research have shown that wild blueberries have twice the antioxidant power of ordinary high-bush blueberries. Wild blueberries are rich in Anthocyanins, the plant compounds that give wild blueberries their deep purplish-blue hue, which have been proven to boost brain, heart, and vision health, and deliver a host of other health benefits.

The Millinocket Marathon was first held in 2015 to help Maine’s most prominent mill town, which was devastated by the closing of their major employer. Runner's World Magazine picked up the story shortly after, and as they say, the rest is history!

The only requirement for runners is to generously support local businesses and contribute to the Katahdin region in some way.

According to figures provided by Shelia Brennan, Director of the Maine Sports Commission, the total economic impact of the Millinocket Marathon on the Katahdin region through the 2021 edition is estimated to be $2,866,252.00.

10/13/2021 - Millinocket Marathon & Half to Require proof of COVID-19 vaccination

The 2021 Millinocket Marathon & Half will run as planned on Saturday, December 4th after last year’s cancellation.

Event organizers have been collecting CDC data and will be following safe event management practices as well as working with public safety professionals and will require various safety protocols as follows:

  • All runners will be required to show physical proof of vaccination in order to participate this year. Electronic copies are NOT acceptable. Maine does not currently use the SMART Health Card or other QR codes for proof of vaccination. A hard copy of either document listed below is required. Acceptable physical documents include:

    • CDC issued COVID-19 vaccination card.

    • State issued certificate/record of COVID-19 vaccination.

    • Need to get vaccinated? Visit vaccinefinder.org to find a COVID-19 vaccination center near you. Registered runners must show up in person to pick up their race materials with photo ID and the proper documentation listed above. No exceptions.

  • Masking in crowded areas around the start and finish areas will be required.

  • It will be strongly recommended that anyone traveling with runners also be vaccinated and follow aforementioned masking guidelines.

  • Indoor events directly related to the event including race registration and the craft fair will require masking.

  • Foot traffic flow controls will be added to help mitigate crowding.

  • Masks are further required in all municipal buildings and properties.

  • Runners will be further asked to use personal judgement and good practices including masking where appropriate in the business community thru out Millinocket and the Katahdin region.

  • The race will feature a rolling start format meaning runners can start at any time during a roughly 10-15 minute window. This will help to prevent crowding in the start area.

The Millinocket Marathon was created in 2015 to provide an economic and emotional boost to the Katahdin region after the collapse of the region’s paper industry. “I applaud the decision to move forward with this year’s event”, said Gary Allen the race founder and director, “I feel like a we can hold both a safe and needed event for Millinocket.”

9/28/2021 - MDI Marathon Solution System NOW LIVE

Dear Friends,

Thank you very much for your patience. The cancellation solution system for our 2021 event is now live. It will offer all registered runners the option to defer their entry, request a refund, or donate their entry to charity.

You should have received an email at the address on file with your registration, which was sent within the ZippyReg system with a personalized URL to select your solution for our canceled race.

This email went out at approximately 4PM on September 28th, addressed from “info@runmdi.org”, with the subject line “2021 Run MDI Solution System - ACTION REQUIRED By 11/1”.

Please be sure to check your junk/spam folder. The deadline to select a solution is November 1st. If no action is taken before November 1st, your 2021 registration will be canceled and your entry fee will be donated.

OTHER REGISTRATION NOTES:

Did you sign up with a charity bib? If you signed up to run with a charity bib in support of the MDI Marathon’s Beyond the Finish Line gift giving and grant program you will have the same solution options as all other registered participants. If you choose to defer to a future edition, you will be automatically included in general registration; you will not be required to complete any further fundraising. Your 2021 efforts will still be issued as gifts and grants in support the local communities of Mount Desert Island, where we run, as well as state, regional, and national organizations.

Did you purchase pasta dinner tickets? If you purchased pasta dinner tickets, and you request a refund, your pasta dinner tickets will also be refunded. If you choose to defer, your pasta dinner tickets will also be deferred. Deferred pasta dinner tickets may be requested for refund thru March 1st.

Did you sign up for the Sea to Summit Race Series? If you signed up for the Sea to Summit Race Series and you request a refund, your Sea to Summit Race Series registration will also be refunded. If you choose to defer, your Sea to Summit Race Series registration will also be deferred. Deferred Sea to Summit Race Series registrations may be requested for refund thru March 1st.

Please know that our race staff is beyond disappointed by the cancellation of this year’s event. We have all been working so hard for our great return, and we know that everyone has put in countless hours and miles of training. We are as saddened and frustrated as anyone.

For what it’s worth, the race was notified on September 9th that the combination of a surge in active COVID-19 cases in Hancock County, plus the new state mandated vaccine requirement for healthcare workers has put an almighty staffing strain on the local EMS, public safety, and medical departments. As a result, these groups are not able to guarantee their availability to staff the race as they have over the past 18 editions. There are no other resources available to make a plan b. This great uncertainty left the race with no other option than to cancel two days after learning this news. It would be negligent to wait-and-see and hope for the best. It would also be negligent to hold to race without the support of these vital departments.

Race officials are very aware that cancelling 36 days out is short notice, however, they also hope that more than 30 days notice has allowed runners to possibly recoup some of their travel expenses and deposits.

To those of you that have shown kindness and compassion to our race staff during this unexpected cancellation, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Our 2022 event is scheduled for Sunday, October 16th. We hope to see you there.

Sincerely,
Team Run MDI

9/25/2021 - MDI Marathon Solution System Coming Soon

Thank you for your patience. Our unexpected cancellation of the 2021 Mount Desert Island Marathon has created a need to build an online system to support cancellation solutions. We expect this laborious process to be completed soon. It will offer all registered runners the option to defer their entry, request a refund, or donate their entry to charity.

From everyone here at Team Run MDI, we wish to thank you again for your understanding and patience.

9/11/2021 - Run MDI Canceled

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The 2021 MDI Marathon has been canceled.

This was not an easy decision. Race organizers have been working hard for the much anticipated 19th running and preparing for a variety of contingencies.

Complications stemming from the recent surge in local COVID-19 infections due to the Delta variant, coupled with an already strained medical and emergency services community has lead to too many uncertainties to safely hold the race.

“This is absolutely devastating news to our entire organization. However, for the safety of our local community, professional partners, participants, volunteers, and fans, we simply cannot risk further spread and further strain on our healthcare system. The last 18 months have been a challenge for everyone. We were hoping to celebrate a great return after last year’s cancellation, instead, we are deeply disappointed at this unexpected turn of events,” explained race director Gary Allen.

All registered participants will be offered multiple solutions as quickly as our race staff can catch our breath.

The 2022 MDI Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, October 16th. We hope to see you there.

Please follow our social media platforms and runmdi.org for further announcements and other pertinent updates.

Thank you in advance for your patience.

Sincerely,
Team Run MDI 2021

6/21/2021 - Bridge the Gap postponed until 2022

Hello, Friends.

We hope that this message finds you all in good health and good spirits.

In our spring update, we outlined that we were in the beginning phases of re-scheduling Bridge the Gap.

As you are probably aware, the 2021 fall race calendar is jam-packed with regularly scheduled events, as well as spring events, like Bridge the Gap, that were forced to postpone. Although our team carefully considered each weekend thru September, October, and November, we were unable to find a suitable make-up date for this year’s race. However, we have EVERY intention of running from Fort Knox to Bucksport as planned on Saturday, May 7th, 2022. (And it will be glorious!)

Participants that deferred their 2020 entries to 2021 will be contacted via email at approximately 4:00PM-ET on June 21, 2021 with instructions to utilize the updated Solution System. The deadline to select a new solution is August 1st.

Please know that this decision was as difficult to make as it would have been to try to squeeze in the race into an already overly full season. Please also know that we are really, really looking forward to doing this thing in 2022.

Thank you all so much for your ongoing support.

5/14/2021 - Maine to Adopt U.S. CDC’s New COVID-19 Guidance

Following a review by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services and the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Governor Janet Mills announced today that the State of Maine will adopt the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (U.S. CDC) new guidance which allows fully vaccinated Americans not to wear face coverings indoors, effective May 24, 2021.

Maine will also lift the physical distancing requirement at indoor public settings where people are eating or drinking and therefore would be removing their face covering – such as indoor restaurants, bars, dining areas in camps or in congregate living facilities, and break rooms.

Consistent with the U.S. CDC’s guidelines, it is recommended that people in Maine who are not fully vaccinated wear face coverings in indoor public settings. The U.S. CDC requires people to wear masks on all planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation.

Yesterday afternoon, the Mills Administration updated the Moving Maine Forward Plan to lift all capacity limits and physical distancing requirements in all outdoor public settings. The Administration also lifted capacity limits for indoor public venues and physical distancing requirements, except in settings where people would be removing their face coverings.

As always, please continue to be kind and take care of yourselves and help others whenever possible. We are still in this together.

4/29/2021 - Spring Update

Hello, Friends.

We hope that this update finds you all in good health and good spirits.

The COVID-19 situation in Maine continues to improve as our state helps to lead the nation in vaccinated individuals. Although there was a recent uptick in new cases, this week we seem to be trending downward again. Additionally, state officials have finally released updated guidelines to allow live racing to safely return to Maine.

Our team is carefully reviewing the 2021 calendar of local races to find a suitable make-up date for Bridge the Gap. In the event that you are unable to attend our make-up date we will have multiple solutions for you.

The current status of each race is as follows:

Finally, Crow Athletics wishes to salute our friends, family, and teammates who have tirelessly been doing their part to help get the pandemic under control. (((Thank you.)))

Please continue to take care of yourselves and help others whenever possible. Practice good social distancing. Wear face coverings when necessary. Wash your hands. Be kind. We are still in this together, and we are stronger for it.

11/12/2020 - How to support the Katahdin Region from Afar

Dear Friends,

We are just weeks away from what would have been our sixth edition of the Millinocket Marathon & Half.

Although it brings us great sadness that we will not be able to run together this year, we want to firmly remind everyone, please DO NOT come to Millinocket over what would have been our scheduled race weekend to ‘run anyway’.

Instead, please find a way to support Millinocket from afar:

  1. Run your own Marathon or Half-Marathon locally at home on December 5th and tag your social media posts with #RunMillinocketAtHome

  2. Make a donation to the Millinocket Marathon Katahdin Community Stimulus: Click here.

  3. Shop the Virtual Craft Fair: Click here.

  4. Shop the Moose Drop-In's Official Race Gear: Click here.

  5. Make a donation to Friends of Millinocket Memorial Library: Click here.

  6. Make a donation to Our Katahdin: Click here.

IMPORTANT REMINDER:

There are NO in-person events planned. There have been NO permits issued. There is NO insurance for this year because there is NO race scheduled.

A large portion of our course is run on privately owned logging roads. Under normal circumstances we obtain permits, permission, and insurance to use these roads. In addition, Maine is experiencing a tremendous surge in positive covid-19 cases and hospitalizations. If you show up to ‘run anyway’ you could endanger future editions of our race from ever being held again.

Please stay where you are and stay safe until we can all be together again. #RunMillinocketAtHome. Thank you. 💙

Wishing you all the best,
from the folks at Crow Athletics

PS - If you were signed up for the 2020 Sea to Summit Maine Race Series, your registration fee was refunded by ZippyReg on October 7th.

10/11/2020 - Millinocket Marathon & Half Canceled

Dear Friends,

Thank you very much for your continued patience. We hope this update finds you & yours in good health and good spirits.

Governor Janet Mills’ office announced on October 6th that the state of Maine will begin Phase 4 of its reopening plan starting on Tuesday, October 13th. Unfortunately, the state mandated Community Sports Guidelines have not been updated for Phase 4, and “group racing events” are still not recommended by the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The current guidelines, last updated on September 1st, are as follows: Group racing events are not recommended at this time. Commonly these events are known as: “road race”, “5k” (3.1 miles), “10k” (6.2 miles), “half marathon” (13.1 miles), “marathon” (26.2 miles), “walk”, and “century or half-century” (100 or 50 miles). Further guidance for safe practice of such events is forthcoming.

In respect to these guidelines, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Millinocket Marathon & Half, originally scheduled for Saturday, December 5th.

“We started this free event to help support Maine’s Katahdin region, and in doing so, we have done the impossible by attracting thousands of participants from all over the US, Canada and beyond,” said Gary Allen, founder and race director. “However, despite multiple in-person races being held in our state during the pandemic, my team and I recognize that public health officials have an obligation to our greater community, and we support their efforts. The health and safety of our participants, along with that of our volunteers, spectators, partners, local community and organizing team has and always will be a top priority.”

In addition to the Maine CDC guidelines outlined above, it should be noted that neither United States Track & Field, nor Road Runners Club of America are currently issuing event sanctions or insurance in instances where local and state mandates cannot be followed.

Because there is no registration fee associated with the race, there will be no refunds or deferrals, with the exception of those who registered for the 2020 Sea to Summit Maine Race Series; those refunds were processed on October 7th. Any donations made to help with expenses for this year’s race will be applied to 2021. Those interested in participating in next year’s event are encouraged to sign up when registration opens.

While this decision weighs heavily on us, the health and well-being of our participants, along with that of our volunteers, spectators, partners, local community and organizing team is of the utmost importance. We appreciate your continued support and look forward to running with you again in the future.

Per the most over-used word of 2020, we are living in unprecedented times. Please continue to take care of yourselves and help others whenever possible. Practice good social distancing. Wear face coverings. Wash your hands. Be kind.

Sincerely,
the folks at Crow Athletics

7/24/2020 - Bridge the Gap, DEST Relay, and RUN MDI Canceled

Dear Friends,

We hope this update finds you & yours in good health and good spirits.

First and foremost, our team wishes to thank everyone for their patience during these unprecedented and uncertain times.

The health and safety of our participants, along with that of our volunteers, spectators, partners, local community and organizing team has and always will be our top priority. This is why, with great regret, we have been left with no other choice but to cancel the following 2020 events: Bridge the Gap Race, originally scheduled for May 2nd; Down East Sunrise Trail Relay, originally scheduled for July 17th & 18th; and the Mount Desert Island Marathon, Half-Marathon & Team Relay, originally scheduled for October 18th.

We had high hopes of re-scheduling Bridge the Gap and DEST Relay for later in the fall, as well as running MDI — all with special considerations, but with the ongoing pandemic, and based on consultation with state officials it has become clear that the best way to protect everyone’s safety is to forgo these events this year. This has been a very difficult decision to make, but one that we strongly believe is in the best interest of everyone involved.

We have multiple solutions for registered participants including:

  • Option 1: Donate your 2020 registration fee to the race.

  • Option 2: Donate your 2020 registration fee to support one of our official charity partners.

  • Option 3: Defer your 2020 registration to 2021, 2022, or 2023.

  • Option 4: If none of the above options are viable, we will work with you to find an alternate solution.

We are currently working with our colleagues at ZippyReg to implement our solution system. We will be contacting registered participants via email in the coming weeks with instructions to select a solution.

While this decision weighs heavily on us, the health and well-being of our running community is of the utmost importance. We appreciate your continued support and look forward to racing with you again in the future.

Finally, please continue to take care of yourselves and help others whenever possible. Practice good social distancing. Wear face coverings. Wash your hands. Be kind. We really are all in this together.

We will be in touch with registered participants again in the coming weeks, just as soon as our ZippyReg solution system is live.

Sincerely,
the folks at Crow Athletics

6/22/2020 - Coronavirus Update

First and foremost, to all of our participants: your continued patience during these uncertain times is deeply appreciated. Thank you.

A group of Maine endurance event organizers are currently working with state officials from the Department of Outdoor Recreation and the Maine Sports Commission to create guidelines for a safe return to racing.

At this time, none of our 2020 events have been canceled. The current status of each race is as follows:

We will release our new race dates as soon as they are finalized, pending further guidance from the state of Maine. In the event that you are unable to attend our make-up date we will have multiple solutions for you.

Finally, Crow Athletics wishes to salute our friends, family, and teammates continuing to work on the frontlines. (((Thank you.)))

4/30/2020 - Bridge the Gap and DEST Relay to run in Fall, new dates TBA.

In support of Governor Janet Mills’ safe and gradual plan to re-open the state of Maine, both Bridge the Gap and Down East Sunrise Trail Relay will be postponed until the fall.

We are working with our local partners to coordinate our new race dates and we will release those details as soon as they are finalized. In the event that you are unable to attend our make-up date we will have multiple solutions for you.

At this time, none of our 2020 events have been canceled. The current status of each race is as follows:

Thank you to all of our participants for your continued patience during these unprecedented times. We look forward to racing again this fall, once it is safe to do so.

Finally, Crow Athletics wishes to salute our friends, family, and teammates working on the frontlines—the world wouldn’t run without you.

Please take care of yourselves and help others whenever possible. We are all in this together.

###

4/23/2020 - Coronavirus Update

Thank you to all of our participants for your patience during these unprecedented times.

Our team is very closely monitoring state guidelines on large gatherings. At this time, none of our 2020 events have been canceled. The current status of each race is as follows:

We will have more information to share as soon as we receive additional direction from the state of Maine.

###

3/16/2020 - Bridge the Gap Race postponed

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic we are facing a postponement of our Bridge the Gap Race, originally scheduled for May 2nd.

The CDC recommends that for the next 8 weeks, organizers cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the U.S.

On Sunday (March 15) Governor Janet Mills proclaimed a civil state of emergency in Maine, and asked that all events with 50 people or more be postponed until further notice.

We will announce a make-up date and other pertinent information/details as we have them.

Until then, please take care of yourselves and each other. Let’s work together to flatten the curve.

You can read the U.S. CDC’s full guidelines on mass gatherings HERE.

No other Crow Athletics races are expected to be postponed at this time.

###

3/14/2020 - Crow Athletics Office Closed until further notice

Our team is currently practicing social distancing and will not be keeping regular office hours until further notice.

Please take care of yourself and others during these uncertain times. Let's work together to flatten the curve.

Wishing you and yours health and kindness.

###

3/13/2020 - State Recommendation on Large Gatherings

Maine DHHS & CDC currently recommends that residents and organizations avoid attending and hosting non-essential large indoor gatherings in the next thirty days (through April 12, 2020). Evidence does not suggest a threshold for what constitutes a “large” gathering. While it may be lower, at the moment, Maine CDC recommends a threshold of 250 or more attendees in a confined space. Given the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the Northeast, suspension of non-essential large group gatherings can help Maine maximize the window of opportunity to limit the potential spread of the virus here.

This recommendation will be re-evaluated in two weeks (by March 26, 2020) to give Maine residents and organizations time to plan. Limiting large gatherings now is proactive and helps Maine continue its preparation for the potential arrival of COVID-19.

You can read more about Maine CDC’s guidelines on limiting community spread of COVID-19 HERE.

###

3/12/2020 - Official Statement regarding coronavirus (COVID-19)

Crow Athletics is closely monitoring updates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), local and State (MAINE) authorities.

We take these matters very seriously. At this time there are no planned changes to our 2020 event schedule.

This is a fluid situation and should anything change we will release pertinent race information as it becomes known.

We will continue to monitor and observe events throughout the country and around the world. Race officials will work with local/state/federal health authorities to develop alternative plans should they need to be implemented. Our primary goal is to protect the welfare of our communities and our participants while hosting safe and enjoyable events.

We encourage everyone to follow recommendations and updates from the CDC as well as watching our various electronic platforms for any race updates, should they become necessary.

In the meantime, please take care of yourselves and each other.
